Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock was an American painter, who led the force behind the abstract expressionist movement in the art world. During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. Jackson Pollock's greatness lies in developing one of the most radical abstract styles in the history of modern art, detaching line from color, redefining the categories of drawing and painting, and finding new means to describe pictorial space.

His artworks were mostly of colors randomly placed or thrown. He didn't have a precise form or definition in his paintings. He and other abstract expressionist showed their concerns and emotions they they felt during world war 2.

During these conflicts and wars, Pollock introduced the method of drip paintings. drippings colors on a large canvas, expressing his inner feelings through his motions and colors. His work went on and he also introduced the drip and splash painting method.

His work and technique inspired me to look through what and how he has done his things.
Applying his technique, I tried to relate Batik along with colors in this module. Color is a vast topic, it is used in various places and is seen everywhere, and batik is an art that creates a design of its own. Thus, I wanted to do something that they can belong with each other.

These are few examples of what I have tried on. Basically I tried cornstarch and flour + water mixture for different samples. This is how it turned out and thus i finally decided on what I would be doing further.

Batik

 Batik

Since module 3, I have been working on batik, a wax and dye technique used on fabrics. It is a method in which the wax is applied on the cloth so that the dye doesn't reach there.
Batik is a topic that intrigued me to explore more on it. When I asked people whether they no batik or not, most replied with 'no'. It is a topic similar to tie and dye many are unaware about this technique.
Since it is also an important technique used on fabrics, I wanted to look more into it.

Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practiced for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot.

Batik is a method of dying fabrics and sometimes paper in which some areas are covered with wax, glues, or specially made products to keep dyes from penetrating the fabric. Typically the wax or other product is laid down in a pattern and then the paint is applied and allowed to dry. The wax is then removed. The area under the wax keeps its original color with an occasional line of color giving it a somewhat crackled look.

These are few examples of what I have been exploring on.
I tried on OHP sheets , gateway sheets, sunboard, wood, acrylic sheet and fabric. Since batik is done using the mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax, I did the exploration with different resistance. I used Fevibond on ohp sheet with glass piant and on sundoard  with paint to get the effect. While on wood I used wax and paint. On the other hand, on fabric, I used a mixture of flour and water as the resistance.

Colors

COLORS

Color is the aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them.

My inspiration is colors.  Here and there, colors everywhere. But it is us who sees the colors as it is. As interesting as it seems, but color as a topic is vast. There are many different parts of colors that have an effect on our daily lives. Looking at various colors, all those vibrant and bright colors yet there are colors that are dull and gloomy. But each color has its own significance. Colors relate to our emotional behavior, affects our mental strength, and also has an impact on our physical ability. Colors as it is a very interesting thing. Color is something that can be felt and seen. We see colors around us in various forms and we use colors to fill in various forms.
Colors can relate to many things.

To see color, light is needed. When light shines on an object some colors bounce off the object and others are absorbed by it. Our eyes only see the colors that are bounced off or reflected.

The sun’s rays contain all the colors of the rainbow mixed together. All the light reflected has different wavelengths and thus when light strikes an object, either it gets reflected or absorbed, thus that is how we see those colors. Light is made up of energy waves which are grouped together in what is called a spectrum. Light that appears white to us, such as light from the sun, is actually composed of many colors. The wavelengths of light are not colored, but produce the sensation of color.
